Bergen Cathedral Choir and mezzosoprano Marianne Beate Kielland are
guided by the Star of the Sea.
Navigation, travelling and longing have always
been sources of inspiration for artists and
myth-makers. The bright North Star, also known

noting the connection with the Latin word for
sea – 'mare' – made the Virgin Mother their
patron saint. Their guiding light in navigation
was also named Stella Maris. The Gregorian
chant Ave maris stella thus bears connotations

In the concert Stella Maris Kjetil Almenning
and Bergen Cathedral Choir have invited a
Norwegian star, the mezzo-soprano Marianne
Beate Kielland, to contribute to a programme
ranging from George Frideric Handel to Edvard
Grieg and from Gaelic tradition to recently composed music.
