Did you think classical musicians
always sit still?
In that case you have not come across the woodwind quartet Carion. The programme is classical,
but the ensemble puts great emphasis on communicating directly with its audience – and one
another. They leave sheet music and music stands
in the rehearsal room, and move around on stage
to elucidate the way the music is put together.
'We play, and we show what we play. Through
choreography, positioning on the stage and movement we shed light on the connections beneath
the structure of the music.'
This is how clarinettist Egīls Šēfers describes
the characteristic approach of the quintet. One
reviewer at a Carion concert wrote that 'the eye
practically becomes an organ of hearing'!
The award-winning ensemble has also been a
great success at the Roskilde Festival with the
Danish electronica guru Bjørn Svin, and has performed with classical celebrities including the flautist
Sir James Galway. At the Bergen International
Festival they appear at Fløien Folkerestaurant at
the upper station of the funicular railway, with a
fantastic view of the city.
'Whatever we do, there is always have lots of fun
and good energy on the stage,' says clarinettist
Šēfers.
The Fløibanen funicular in Bergen is one of
Norway's best-known attractions. The lower station is in the heart of Bergen, a short walk from
the fish market and the Bryggen wharf. The 5–8
minute journey to the upper station (320 m above
sea level) is an experience in itself, and at the top
you can enjoy fantastic views over Bergen.
