Winterreise (Winter Journey), the
song cycle by Franz Schubert to texts
by Wilhelm Müller, is one of the bestknown cycles in the Romantic repertoire, and was amongst the last works
Schubert composed before his death
at the age of 31.
'Winterreise is a unique work! For me it
is the epitome of the lied. Schubert died

long before reaching my age, but he
was so far ahead of everyone else – just
listen to how modern it sounds. Every
single performance is an inner journey,
and may at times be really strenuous.'
So says Bo Skovhus, baritone, who
started singing the work two years ago.
The Danish singer is known for his sensational debut as Don Giovanni at the
Vienna Volksoper at the age of 26, and
also as a superb interpreter of lieder.
At the Bergen International Festival he
appears with Stefan Vladar, the composer, pianist and principal conductor of
the Vienna Chamber Orchestra.
'[Skovhus is] among the world's most
uncompromising singers … He is a
force of nature, whose communicative

The Van Baerle Trio derives its name
from the place where it all started. The
members of the trio met while students
at the conservatoire, a stone's throw
from the Concertgebouw, which is
located on Van Baerle Street. Having
performed at the Concertgebouw
numerous times, they consider it their
musical home. The hall also nominated
the trio for 'ECHO Rising Stars 2013–14',
a tour which took them to some of the
greatest concert halls in Europe.
The trio's first recording, comprising
works by Saint-Saëns, Loevendie and
Ravel, was released in 2012, and received an Edison Award in 2013 in addition
to press acclaim at home and abroad.
Saint-Saëns is also on the Troldsalen
programme, alongside works by Charles
Ives and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
'Ravel's solo work Miroirs and Grieg's
Moods were written at exactly the same
time, and they are constructed in the
same way, with titles and themes that
reflect not only the relationship between music and impression, but also
the composers' fascination for folk
music,' says the award winning pianist,
who has appeared at the Nordland
Musikkfestuke, Olavsfestdagene and
Oslo Chamber Music Festival.
sE Det VAR Det was a birthday present
from Thommessen to Grieg, written for
the 1993 Bergen International Festival,
when the 150th anniversary of the
composer's birth was celebrated.
'This is my first encounter with
Thommessen's music as a performer.
But where could it be more perfect to
play birthday music for Grieg than at
Troldhaugen?' asks Ingrid Andsnes.

The members of the Leonore Trio are
three internationally acclaimed musicians whose piano trio performances
in Ensemble 360 were so well received
that they branched out on their own in
2012. Their first recording, with works
by Arensky and Rachmaninov, received
critical acclaim on its release last spring:
'… the Leonores play with truly glorious
affection and security … Balance … and
