Setting the sun angle can take a bit of getting used to. Try moving the vertical and then the horizontal by only a couple of notches each until you see where the sun rays are coming from. Another trick is to face the light source and move the sliders until the light hits your avatar in the face, then adjust very slowly until you get the right angle of shadow.
