The Bar of Ireland’s Transition Year Programme is a
unique opportunity to experience life as a
barrister.
This exciting access all areas five-day programme
runs annually in the first week of February and
offers secondary school students a unique insight
into the working life of a barrister.
Participants spend each morning shadowing a
barrister, including accompanying them as they
attend court. During the afternoons, the students
participate in a range of different activities, which
may include trial viewing, a visit to The King’s Inns,
a tour of the Four Courts and the Criminal Courts

of Justice, a talk from a Court Garda, a talk from a
sitting judge and more. The highlight for many is
participating in a mock trial in a courtroom on the
final day of the programme, which is a fantastic
opportunity to put into practice much of what they
have learned during the week.
The Bar of Ireland encourages schools countrywide
to nominate a student to take part, particularly
those who would not otherwise have access to the
Bar. There are 100 places available with a
minimum of 20% of places reserved for students
from DEIS schools and the remaining places
allocated by a lottery draw performed by The Bar
of Ireland.
