Like most top models never went to modeling schools, and most famous artists never went to art school, leading fashion designer Craig Signer never went to design school. These kinds of people didn’t spend their childhood daydreaming about it and they couldn’t have been more surprised when someone invariably steps out of nowhere and almost by magic they get discovered.

Craig Signer’s road to fashion designer started out by turning down a scholarship to Pratt Institute as a senior in high school. Instead he moved to Los Angeles and took a job designing ads. A year later he enrolled at UCLA for business and marketing, which led to an immediate career in global product design complete with first

class travel all over the world.

His turning point happened in Paris where Signer worked for a textile mill. He was the best at choosing the right yarns and perfect colors used to design couture fabrics. The late Cecile Rothschild, whose family linage comes as close to royalty as one can, saw Craig’s brilliant designs and could not resist. She invited him to her apartment, the former Coco Channel Paris residence, where the two became quick friends. Although she was one of Karl Lagerfeld’s biggest couture client she encouraged Craig to begin his career in design. Craig Signer never imagined he’d be a fashion designer, but Madame Rothschild had a vision and can be credited for discovering him. He has since, co-authored, “Collective Fashion Wisdom,” along with Joyce Elkus, formerly of Saks Fifth Avenue,

Nancy Brinker and Jay Ott.
