Behind the Front Door July, 2013. Volume 2. | Page 2

Editorial

Time passes and I am always reminded of how quickly things can change, to appreciate the moments as they happen because life happens when one is busy looking at other things – and you miss it.

The second issue of Behind the Front Door literary magazine offers a fantastic selection of visual art including sketches, paintings, and photographs. Poetry and two short stories make up our literature section while we have added a section to include film discussions and a feature on the incredible iPad application Full Metal Jacket Diary by Matthew Modine.

On a personal note, the magazine has been delayed a few days from the original projected publish date of July 1, 2013 due to an unexpected event in my family. I apologise to our contributors and readers for the delay and appreciate the patience and support, truly.

Being First Nations, raised on a small Reserve in Northern Ontario, there was never the sense of ‘coming from’ somewhere else that so many other Canadians talked about. Later in life, the discovery of my father’s side of the family revealed a lush and rich history of people that settled in Canada from Scotland. Not only did I have the story of where part of me came from but ruins of the family home still existed.

Travelling to Scotland years later, walking the earth where my family farmed a century earlier, was a surreal yet completely grounding experience. Touching the stone of the ruins of the house that had stood there in the 1600’s was literally a concrete realisation we are all connected and a part of something bigger, even if we don’t know it.

We buried my grandmother today. A difficult time made a little easier with our family. She was known for her love of yellow roses, fine linens and ball room dancing. Lucky enough to have two loves of her life and died knowing she was very treasured. She said many times if things didn’t work out, to send lots of yellow flowers.

So, we did.
