Quality Eating – Getting the balance right!
Q
Nutrition...
uality eating refers to a number of
factors. The type of food that you
eat, the amount of food that you
eat, the times of day that you eat that
food, how it’s prepared and the ratio of
Carbohydrates / Protein / Fat.
I will give you some options for the
correct foods to eat, when to eat them
and some suggestions on how to
combine them. However, I will also allow
you to choose your foods and make your
own creative clean eating recipes.
Carbohydrates – The body’s prime energy source
T
he foods we eat contain nutrients
that provide energy and other
things the body needs. Most of
the nutrients in food fall into three
major groups: proteins, fats, and
carbohydrates.
The two main forms of carbohydrates are
simple carbs, sugars (such as fructose,
glucose, and lactose) and complex carbs,
starches and fibre, which are found in
foods such as vegetables, grains, rice,
breads, and cereals.
The body breaks down (or converts)
most carbohydrates into the sugar
glucose, which is absorbed into the
bloodstream. As the glucose level rises
in the body, the pancreas releases a
hormone called insulin. Insulin is needed
to move sugar from the blood into the
cells, where it can be used as a source
of energy.
Carbohydrates are responsible
for many functions of the body
including:
? Proper function of the brain, and
? Utilisation of energy by the muscles
? Fibre contributes to digestive health
