In simple terms , a PRS licence ensures that the songwriters and composers of music get paid whilst a PPL licence ensures that the record companies and performers who produced or played on the recorded music you play get paid . Where does my PPL licence fee go ?
After the deduction of running costs , all licence fee income is distributed to PPL ’ s members who include major record labels and independents as well as globally successful performers and session musicians . A PPL licence ensures that those who invest their time , talent and money to make music are fairly paid for their work . PPL does not retain a profit for its services .
Do other sectors and businesses need to get a PPL licence ?
Yes , any business that plays recorded music in public will usually need a PPL licence .
PPL ’ s licence means you don ’ t have to contact each record company individually to obtain their permission to play recorded music from PPL ’ s vast repertoire , which includes nearly all commercially released music .
