This project, brought to life by Finished Basements, saw a complete overhaul of both the main floor and the basement, reimagining the home for contemporary living.
The main floor was completely gutted, starting with the installation of new hardwood flooring that sets a warm, inviting tone. The most dramatic change came with the removal of a key supporting wall, a move that required the installation of new, carefully engineered beams to ensure structural integrity. This process led to an unexpected discovery, a steel beam hidden beneath a brick wall, which also had to be replaced to meet the new structural requirements. The result is a seamless, open-concept flow that dramatically expands the living space.
Downstairs, the basement presented its own unique set of challenges. Initially divided into two cramped sections by a thick foundation wall, the space was dark and offered limited use. To solve this, the team took on the ambitious task of underpinning the basement floor, lowering it to achieve a comfortable 8-foot ceiling height. This process required the installation of new drains, a sump pump, and a sewage ejector. The dividing foundation wall was then demolished, creating one expansive, open basement.
The newly unified basement now features new stairs, framing, insulation, and drywall. Essential upgrades included a new furnace and HVAC system, as well as a completely new electrical and plumbing infrastructure. A stylish three-piece washroom with a shower, modern toilet, and vanity was also installed. The transformation was completed with the addition of new vinyl plank flooring, providing a durable and stylish finish to the entire lower level. The end result is a bright and functional space that is an ideal extension of the home’ s upper level.
The heart of the new main floor is a modern kitchen featuring sleek quartz countertops, a spacious island perfect for gathering, and a large picture window that floods the space with natural light. The renovation also included a new powder room with a contemporary toilet and vanity, adding a touch of elegance. All new electrical and plumbing were installed throughout the floor, ensuring the home is not only beautiful but also safe and up to code.
