When designer Uzma Wali took on the renovation of a mature countryside home, the challenge was clear: transform a tired kitchen into a space that balanced both highfunctioning practicality and sophisticated visual appeal. The clients- a couple with contrasting design preferences and a deep appreciation for home-cooked meals- wanted more than just a cosmetic facelift. They needed a kitchen that could support culinary creativity without compromising on beauty.
Maximizing storage and counter space was a top priority. Uzma and her team took a holistic approach, utilizing every available corner, nook, and cranny to its full potential. The result? A layout that feels expansive, intuitive, and delightfully efficient.
Aesthetically, the kitchen is a quiet triumph in colour and material harmony. The cabinetry, painted in a serene blue with orchard midtones and subtle violet undertones, pairs beautifully with warm maple paneling- a nod to the wood-clad family room that borders the space. The texture play is subtle but impactful: monochromatic finishes dominate, with minimal contrasting accessories, allowing the natural materials and tones to speak for themselves.
As with any renovation in a mature home, surprises lurked beneath the surface.“ When we opened the flooring, we discovered three different layers of old flooring and a subfloor that was completely unusable,” says Uzma.
The entire subfloor had to be replaced- a significant setback that was met with determination and expertise.
Perhaps most impressive is the way Uzma blended the clients’ distinct styles into a cohesive design that honors both personalities. It’ s this tailored balance, combined with the thoughtful integration of old and new elements, that makes the space so inviting.
The journey, though complicated by rural logistics and long commutes, was ultimately one of transformation. And for those dreaming of a kitchen that’ s as hardworking as it is heartwarming, this project offers plenty of inspiration.- Reflection360, www. reflection360. ca
