It has been said that we spend on average a third of our lives in our bedroom and yet , the master bedroom is often the last room that we look to when designing or renovating our homes . Creating a master suite that offers a retreat at the end of the day is something we should all make more of a priority . ( Is your bedroom in need of a makeover ? Check out our Bedroom Must- Haves on page 20 for some of the things designers use to create an oasis in their own homes .)
Mandy and I redesigned our master suite a couple years ago . We came to the conclusion that our children had claimed the majority of our home and we needed a space to call our own . We wanted a sanctuary where we could relax after a long day . We started by drafting a plan , coming up with a design concept and put the wheels in motion . ( Check out one of
my most recent bedroom design board concept on page 26 .)
My inspiration for the space came from a set of four abstract art pieces that hang on each side of our window . I pulled a muted green with blue undertones from the art and we painted the walls in this color . To create contrast , I hung linen drapes to soften the space and paired it with a neutral headboard and bedspread . For a final touch , I picked out some artful accent pillows that continued the colors found in the art pieces .
Once the bedroom was complete , we decided to convert the adjoining bedroom into a master walk-in closet with a makeup station . We also opened up one of the existing closets to install a 2-person Jacuzzi tub and hung a chandelier over the tub that perfectly complements the chandelier hanging over the bed . We finished off the look with a few accessories and moved back into our newly renovated master suite . ( See Jillian ’ s master suite ideas in Explore Décor on page 28 for more inspiration for your master suite .)
Renovating your master suite can be one of the most intrusive projects you undertake as you have to move out of your bedroom while the contractors work . One piece of advice that I would like to share is to convert another area such as the guest bedroom or office into a bedroom while the work is being completed . The more comfortable you are during the reno , the less stressed you will be if delays arise during the process .
