Owl About the Enviroment

By Bhargava Sharma

“Hoot, Hoot”. On a cold evening you hear the soft gentle sounds of an owl as is whispers it’s quiet low cacophony. This owl lives in the coniferous forest. The name of the owl is the Northern Spotted Owl. It is a vital part to the forest as it helps keep balance in nature. However, those pesky humans are always invading and wanting more for themselves. Hunters are led these owls to the brink of extinction and only a few hundred remain in the wild.

You may be thinking, “how does this affect the environment.” Well, it does impact the environment and in a very big way. Every year around the summertime the nun moths that have invaded from Eurasia spread throughout the forest and they love to feed on conifers. Many of the birds do not like to feed on these animals as they have a higher acidity in them than other animals. The only animal that does not mind eating these moths are the Northern Spotted Owls. Now that the owls are near extinction there is no on to feed on the delectable moths. The moths begin to eat up tree bark and interfere by eating up the inside of the tree as well. This causes the tree to die. In one day a pack of 30 moths can kill 1 Red wood tree! within 1 month half the coniferous forest would be gone if it were not for the owls that still remain. Overall the chain reactions have led humans guilty and soon enough without paying enough attention to the environment. The coniferous forest may be extinct forever.
