May 2016 : Beating Drum Page 2 The NMC Construction Group hosted a series of cultural diversity workshops in May 2016. The aim of these workshops was to enable value-driven diversity appreciation within the group. Melanie Burke, a specialist Diversity Management Consultant of MAB & Associates, facilitated the three hour sessions in which she explored various thinking patterns that limit the individuals ability to embrace diversity within both a business and social setting. “The workshops were geared to equip participants to view diversity as an opportunity and understand the positive benefits for the business and the individual’s personal growth. During these sessions employees were encouraged to do some introspection and reflect on their day-to-day behaviour in relation to cultural diversity. Individual take-aways were both suprising and refreshing. ” Wendy McAll, NMC Group HR Manager. Go for Gold participants inspire all at fundraising dinner The NMC Construction Group actively supports the Go for Gold fundraising dinner and auction. This year the dinner was held on 31 May at Pigalle restaurant, with 19 companies representing the construction industry in attendance. A total of R580 000 was raised at the event. Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer for the evening Verity Price provided ample entertainment with the help of comedian Conrad Koch and his cheeky friend, Chester Missing. The guest speaker Amanda Filtane, who completed her internship year with NMC, inspired the crowd with her speech. She shared her experiences as a female in the male dominated construction industry, from the time she joined NMC as an intern up to her current position as a project manager at the Department of Rural Development. Another inspiring moment was Nomathamsango Malothe’s reading of poem describing her life’s journey including her experience as a Go for Gold participant. Featured right are the words of this thought provoking poem. Burning rubber in the Karoo The NMC Building division hosted clients at a social biking event in the Karoo, at the end of May. The Tankwa Bike Burn is every bikers dream weekend, a colourful blend of various types of bike races for dual and plastic bikes. Some of the activities included supported outrides, drag and wheelie competitions and a marked track for the plastic bikes. An estimated 130 motorcyclists joined in the fun and the NMC team thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.
