In "Mantis" 1935, his natural subject matter and
commonality with a natural symbol (e.g. the
mantis) would become a key theme for the beats
such as Snyder. "You point-they say-you lead lost
children".Here he is talking matter of fact about
how the Mantis guides the youth. The level of
abstraction used here, reminiscent of Donne, is
also a bridge to the beats. Both Zukofsky and
Pound
were
profound
early
influences.

Next we had Charles Olson (1910-1970) who
first published ‘Projective Verse' or ‘Open Field
Poetics' as a follow-on to the ideas presented by
both Pound and Williams. He advocates a return
to the syllable or line as opposed to the image or
symbol. He reiterates Pound's notion of the poem
as a "high energy discharge" which demands the
"musical phrase" (Cook, 2004). Olson implies more
speed, more connection and more perceptions
"One Perception must immediately lead to a
further perception" (Cook, 2004). Furthermore he
states that the poem should be close to the mind’s
speed “the push of the line under hand of the
