movement in France which also gains popularity
in Brazil. Also in America the Lakota and Dakota
Indians hold world ceremonies to try and ward off
malevolent spirits. In the early 20 th century
western artists such as Van Gogh are deemed to be
shamans. Certain forms of mental illnesses are
deemed to be shamanic also. (Harvey & Wallis,
2007)
The Eranos Conferences set up by Carl Jung
brings together mythological and shamanic
scholars and starts a new era of research and
insight. In the 50’s and 60’s we have a new
interest in psychedelics and “psychonauts”. This is
also the beginning of the beat generation and
when Mircea Eliade’s book “The Archaic
Techniques of Ecstasy” (1951) is published. It
quickly gains vast scholarly and popular
attention. In this same period Carlos Castanda
publishes his “The Teachings of Don Juan” (1968)
giving form to a new entheogen based vision of
shamanism which attracts the “psychedelic
generation” (Harvey & Wallis, 2007).. In the
1980’s and 1990's we see the publication of
Michael Harner's "The Way of The Shaman"
