“‘ Ghetto ’ is a play by Joshua Sobol that takes place in the Vilna Ghetto , a Nazi-established Jewish ghetto in Vilnius , Lithuania during World War II . The play follows the lives of a group of Jewish theater artists who are forced to create propaganda plays for the Nazis in order to survive . Gens , the head of the Jewish Council in the ghetto , is struggling to balance his responsibility to his people with his obligations to the Nazis . As the play progresses , the theater artists become increasingly aware of the horrors of the Holocaust and the impossibility of resisting the Nazis . They ultimately decide to use their final performance as an act of defiance , changing the ending to a violent revolt against the Nazis rather than a surrender . The play is a powerful exploration of the human spirit and the struggle for survival in the face of unimaginable horror . It examines the complex moral choices faced by those living in the Vilna Ghetto , and the power of art to inspire resistance and rebellion in the face of oppression .”
