Building off of a gold medal from last year , excitement is strong for the upcoming girls basketball season . With the state championship , many people are left wondering , what ’ s next ?
“ This season is definitely going to be good ,” Junior Khayla Garrett said . “ We have tons of new players that we have to learn , and new things to put into action for a great start of the new season coming up .”
The Bearettes had nine seniors graduate last year , leaving the team wide open to rebuild and become stronger . This gives many opportunities in every aspect of the game .
“ Anytime you have 11 on a team and nine graduate , you are not going to have the same team ,” Head Coach Jeremy Durham said . “ In the end , we are just going to play the best basketball we can .”
With the nine seniors graduating , the team has to establish new leaders and new role players from the roster .
“ We have the twins coming back , being good leaders , and good players ,” Durham said . “ Three players , Hannah Stout , Tiykeah McKenzie , and Michelle Lewis all have big things expected out of them as well .”
All of the team , coaches and players are on the same page on what they want out of the season .
“ It ’ s a new year and building a new team ,” Junior Khayla Garrett said . “ The end goal is the same but we are first off trying to rebuild from last year .”
The Bearettes will play their first game this year on Nov . 3 , which will be a scrimmage . The first regular pre-season game will be Nov . 8 against Edgewood .
The district has realigned , and with this happening , district will start on Dec . 16 vs . Van . The teams included in our district this year are Van , Lindale , Mabank , Athens ,
Canton , and Cumberland Academy .
