This year the nursing staff of BISD has shined above and beyond expectations . Our exceptional nurses provide direct care for students struggling with physical , mental , and emotional health . The district is fortunate enough to have six wonderful ladies that make up our nursing staff . Each and every day they are tasked with the huge responsibility of maintaining the health and safety of students on each campus . Nurses are equipped to handle a variety of things .
“ Besides immunizations , hearing , vision and scoliosis screens , heights and weights , individual health care plans , health / puberty / sexual education , committees , chronic health needs , and so much more , we are the front line of health care in many situations ,” said BIS nurse and BISD lead RN , Diana Williams . “ A school nurse can adapt to 20 + different circumstances all in one day .... from headaches , splinters , broken bones , vomiting , chronic issues , to any kind of emergency for our students and staff !” However , their job extends far beyond tending to a student ’ s physical needs . Our nurses work tirelessly to assist students in any way they can . “ Nursing is more than passing out peppermints and ice packs . It is being a listening ear , it is a good morning hug and telling students they will have a great day , it is saying I am proud of your work and attitude ,” said Amy Fulgham , BES nurse . Students can also rely on nurses in times of crisis . “ One thing that has really touched my heart is being there for students who are faced with a sudden , life changing diagnosis and what seems to them , to be the most difficult time in their life . Providing ongoing
support , education , coping mechanisms and strategies and most importantly being there for them in some of their darkest moments is special to me ,” said BHS nurse , Emily Epperson . Being a school nurse also requires being able to lend a helping hand to those in need of mental assistance . “ It is being a voice for the voiceless , it is making a small human feel safe in a big world , it is a blessing and honor ,” said Fulgham . Nursing is much like being a coach , teacher , and counselor all at once . “ School nursing entails so many different responsibilities , between all the normal daily tasks , the main thing we are here for is to keep our students safe , encouraged , healthy , confident , and happy at school ,” said Williams . Nurses are an important part of many students ’ days . “ Some students may not ever need the school nurse , while others , it ’ s a safe place where they can come take a deep breath , get fed encouragement , and tackle the rest of their day ,” said Epperson . Nurses are often appreciated for their caring and loving attitude .
“ My favorite part of school nursing is interacting with the kids . I think of them as my children ; I worry about them , I love cheering them on , and I enjoy helping in any way I can to make their day better ,” said our CIS nurse Erika Myer . Overall , nurses are a huge part of the BISD staff , and should be recognized for their hard work and dedication for what they do . “ We truly have a great team of nurses at BISD ,” said Epperson .
