Creative
journey
My name is Mary DeTray, owner/designer of Brass Rabbit Studio,
and im not really sure where to begin. I suppose my journey has quite
a few places I could start from but I
will begin a couple months before
my shop oppening in September of
2014.
I had a pretty rough year struggling
with a, untill now, very person and
private substance abuse issue. I will
not get into all the hairy details but i
will say that it was bad. I sought out
treatment and began the journey to
get better, for myself but most of all
for my children and husband whom
mean the world to me and deserved much better than what i was
giving. While in treatment I was
told it would be a good idea to find
a healthy hobby. I’ve always been
an artistic person, by nature, so its
no wonder i saught out something
creative. I went to Joan Fabrics
looking for mainly art supplies for
painting, I had painted in the past
and really enjoyed that but to get
to the paint section you first have
to navigate the beading section ha
ha! I saw all the beautiful beads and
couldnt help myself. That’s where it
began. After that I visted Shipwreck
Beads, my local beading store and
am a little embarrassed to say I left
with half the warehouse ha ha ha!
I started making simple things like
the one pictured and quickly found
art beads on pinterest. Now art
beads are not the most affordable
jewelry materials so I wasnt able
creativebeadchat.com
to get nearly as much as I wanted
to. About a month after i started
creating my friends and family were
making custom requests and a few
urged me to think about trying to
selling my creations at local shops.
Now im not to great at trying to
“sell” myself or products so I desided I would be much more comfortable opening an online space
where people could see my work
and deside if they wanted it rather
than take rejection to my face ha ha
ha. And so, I opened Brass Rabbit
Studio, on Etsy. To be quite honest
I really didnt think my shop would
have more than a couple sales
from family and friends. But to my
surprise my opening was quite a
success, and things kind of snow
balled from there. Im excited that
my jewelry has now afforded me
the luxury of staying home with my
two beautiful children and really
helped me on my path to recovery.
There is something so healing to
me about sitting down and creating. Like everything in the world, all
the worries on my mind dissapear
for those hours in my studio. This
has been my journey so far and I
feel it’s just the beginning. The fact
that I can have something I love be
what i DO has truly made me feel
blessed.
