R
eady or not, it’s the beginning of a new decade.
This year, Art Deco makes a return as an au
courant homage to the 1920s movement.
There’s also a practical push for open-concept kitchens
and expansive balconies to imitate a connection
to nature and amorphous spaces. Jordan Horsley of
360 Interiors has identified another central trend:
Anything goes.
“Off-trend will be the trend for decorating,” he says.

Modern homes are now centering floor plans around
large gathering spaces that focus on friends, family and
food. Oversized dining tables invite long conversations
over meals, offering a moment of stability. It has become
more common for renovators to remove kitchen walls
connected to the living room to eliminate the feeling of
isolation from the rest of the home.
“Dining al fresco via outdoor kitchens under verandas
are an excellent way to connect with our guests and
nature simultaneously,” Horsley says. “The ergonomics
are meant to provoke intention by forcing us to adapt to
our surroundings and be present.”
Mixing textures adds layers to a scene by creating
depth without sacrificing the overall character of a
room. When decorating with shades of white, add a
statement abstract art piece to tie the room together.
Freshen up a space without committing to a color
scheme by adding faux or real greenery. According to
the laws of Feng Shui, it also soothes the mind.
“To make a subtle transition, try switching out accent
pillows on the sofa or bed with a geometric pattern
or strong hue that will liven up the room,” Horsley
says. “Deep greens and blues mixed with coconut
white hues in coastal decorating imitate the colors of the
sea. Contrasting shapes and shades show easy elegance
in a home.”
BE THE TREND FOR
Excess, glamour and luxury ruled the 1920s and
we see it circling back nearly a century later. The
hallmarks of Art Deco (short for Arts Décoratifs)
include sophisticated punches of color such as emerald
green, deep red and navy. Vignettes are typically
moody and accessorized with geometric sculptures.
Other notable features are clean lines, dark wood
finishes and mixed metallics—and the swankier,
the better.
