It’s a new year and a new decade. And not just any decade. Once again, it’s the twenties.
A hallmark of the Roaring Twenties was a departure from the traditional. Nearly every facet of
American life was undergoing a sweeping revision, particularly the idea of leisure. It was a decade of
affluence that allowed Americans to vacation in unprecedented numbers—to get away from it all. And
the beach was often the destination of choice.
This issue of beachLIFE represents a natural expansion on this theme, as it explores realms beyond the
traditional beach vacation. We tour the distinctive communities of 30A—from Dune Allen Beach
to Inlet Beach—before heading off to the Songwriters Festival 2020. Our writers take a cruise on
a new kind of scooter seemingly custom-made for the trails of Santa Rosa Beach. The Kickbike, as
it’s called, looks to become as popular as the YOLO board. It’s then off to Grayton Beach to catch up
with co-owner Oli Petit and the much-anticipated opening of the Red Bar after a fire destroyed this
much-loved 30A institution in February of 2019.
This issue also explores decorating trends of the new decade, and it turns out the Art Deco themes
of the Roaring Twenties are back. From here we take a look at the eco-friendly apparel made from
recyclable plastics offered by The 30A Company. Our perennially popular cocktail recipes return
to the pages of beachLIFE with a nod to the classics. Tasty and simple to make, they’re sure to be the
life of the party.
BeachLIFE then makes yet another departure to explore the area’s bays and river systems to the
north of Santa Rosa Beach. From night fishing on kayaks to reef and eco tours, local experts show us
the area’s extraordinary backwaters. The excursion wraps up with a spa day getaway followed by a
wine and whiskey tasting with local experts.
So welcome aboard as beachLIFE heads off to destinations near and far. And raise your glass to a
decade that promises to be every bit as spectacular and audacious as its predecessor!
