More than 15,000 parents will hear the words , “ your child has cancer ,” and more than 40,000 children are in cancer treatment every year . The burdens placed on families when cancer intrudes are unbelievably heavy , materializing in financial , emotional or mental stress and often include a combination of all three . In 2015 , after discovering friends were battling this hardship , Shelley and Casey Joiner of Santa Rosa Beach decided they wanted to help and created Sandcastle Kids .
