Aside from the white sugary sands leading up to the pristine Gulf of Mexico , visitors to the Emerald Coast will find themselves up close and personal with another body of water , and one of the rarest geological phenomenas in the world : the Coastal Dune Lake .
Otherwise located only in Australia , New Zealand , and Madagascar , one doesn ’ t need a passport to view these unique physical habitats . In fact , there are 15 named Coastal Dune Lakes that dot South Walton ’ s coast , allowing anyone the opportunity to discover more about these natural gems .
One of the primary indicators of a Coastal Dune Lake is the connection between lake and Gulf . These outfalls may be as shallow as one foot , that beachgoers can easily cross , such as at Oyster Lake . They can also be as wide as three feet deep , like that at Western Lake ’ s outfall in Grayton Beach . Depending on lake levels and gulf tides , the channel that materializes between the two , allows a mixture of salt and fresh water to merge , establishing an exclusive eco-environment . Arguably , one of the most prominent features of a coastal dune lake is the copper-colored tannic that results from the breakdown of nearby organic matter , primarily from pine trees . Although many upon first glance believe this water is somehow polluted , tannic is just a natural occurrence found in all lakes and rivers , but appears more prominent when poised next to a crystal clear Gulf of Mexico .
While Coastal Dune Lakes vary in shape , size , color , and in several other characteristics , their importance is profound . From serving as wetlands that offer flood protection and water purification , to harboring biologically diverse wildlife and vegetation , Coastal Dune Lakes are not only cool , they are critical . With so few coastal dune lakes worldwide , it is no wonder why groups , including the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance and the Walton County Coastal Dune Lake Advisory Board , keep close tabs on the water quality , as well as educate visitors on these precious landmarks .
If you find yourself looking for an adventure outside of a day lounging at the beach , be sure to grab a paddle board ( or a kayak ) and some friends to spend some time exploring these lakes . Whether you opt for a guided tour or head out on your own , between the various inlets and hideaways , wildlife , and gorgeous sunsets galore , you will find yourself with a completely different perspective — one that encapsulates a truly beautiful experience like no other .
