MENTORING:
SUCCEEDING
JOHN BEELER
1975, B.A., RADIO/TV/FILM
Owner, Beeler & Associates and publisher, Beachcomber newspaper
“Beach students intern for class credit (120
hours per semester) in our offices. Mentoring
them is a way of giving back to the university and
future generations of students by sharing what
I’ve learned in business over the past 38 years.
The more memorable students were those who
taught me something (like golf).”
TOGETHER
AT THE BEACH
There is nothing like sharing your
pathway to success to help a
friend, or reaching out to an expe-
rienced individual for support.
From fellow CSULB alums to your
favorite faculty members, men-
tors and mentees come in all
forms and exude what it means to
be a part of the Beach Family.
Thank you to our alums for shar-
ing the impacts of mentoring on
their lives. For more stories like
these , visit our website at csulb.edu/

JANINE CORNELISON
2010, B.A., JOURNALISM
Academic Advisor, California State University, Bakersfield
“Having Benjamin Olague `15 as my SOAR and
academic advisor, as well as colleague and
supervisor has made such a significant impact
on my life. When I was an undergraduate, I was
able to experience firsthand that having some-
one to lean on during tough times or to give you
the extra push of confidence is essential to be a
successful student.”
ANN DALKEY
1974, B.S., MARINE BIOLOGY
1982, M.S., BIOLOGY
Retired Marine Biologist, City of Los Angeles
“I mentored Beach students while working for the
Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.
Students worked with me on monitoring restoration
projects, field prep and data entry. I treated the
students as partners in work, and they were
clearly learning. Out of all the students that I
mentored, CSULB students were consistently of
the highest quality.”
