A Perennial Powerhouse

E
xpectations are high for wrestlers of all levels in the Enka
district of Buncombe County, as each year they prove to be
among the best in the state. In the last three years, the Jets
of Enka Middle have finished in the top three for the 2016
Junior High State Championship, and this season, they finally
took the title home.
Led by coach Mike Shaffer, the team has extended its winning
streak to a remarkable 67 consecutive dual match victories,
and has finished its fifth consecutive year as conference season
and tournament champions. Enka High’s wrestling team has
seen impressive victories in the recent years, as well, which
is in part due to these fine wrestlers taking their sport to the
next level.
“We continually strive to create a program where students can learn the values of hard work and ded-
ication that will build success on the mat and in the classroom,” says Shaffer. “We want everyone who
comes through our program to leave with the attitude that through hard work anything is possible.”
