SCHOOL NUTRITION
The BCS School Nutrition Department strives to provide students and staff with balanced and
nutritious meals each school day. This department is the largest foodservice organization in
Western North Carolina serving almost 11,000 breakfasts and 14,000 lunches per school day!
We provide nutrition education and work closely
with teachers and parents to promote healthy eating
habits.
Students have the opportunity to attend produce
fairs and sample locally grown fruits and vegetables
brought to their lunchrooms. It helps inform students
about healthy lifestyles and the importance of variety
in their diet.
The summer of 2016 marked a huge time for the
summer meals program, which offers free breakfasts
and lunches at sites across the county. Over 86,000
meals were provided this summer – more than any
other summer to-date!
In 2016, the School Nutrition department was
recognized by the NC Department of Public Instruction
with an Innovation in Summer Feeding Gold Level
Award. The department was also recognized for
their collaboration with volunteers and faith based
communities to increase summer meals distribution.
Plus, the department is also a finalist for a federal
award for their work in making the summer meals
program successful.
The innovative Breakfast in the Classroom Program is
in 43 of our schools, ensuring all our students have
an opportunity to start the day with a healthy meal.
Our Nutrition Department staff members are also
playing a role in shaping policy regarding school
nutrition, serving on boards for the NC Department of
Agriculture and NC School Nutrition Association.
