That meant no window displays for passersby – a conundrum that called for a fix. Enter the mannequin and outfits.
“ We change them every day,” Calvert said. The practice became such a staple for the business that it now has wheeled mannequins for ease of use.
Inside, Calvert said the boutique tries to offer a range of women’ s clothing. Keeping the offerings across the board means there’ s a greater chance customers will find a piece they love. When in doubt, Calvert said she’ ll ask employees for their thoughts before ordering an item.
As the weather grows colder, Calvert said customers lean toward layers – especially when January rolls around. Cozy sweaters in particular sell well as the year drags on. And for the holidays, she said a business poll told her Maryville wants more velvet.
When it’ s cold, the weather often drives sales toward“ anything we have that’ s fuzzy and warm.”
“ People will just buy it because they want to be warm,” she said.
On top of that, Calvert said Boutique on Broadway is also selling loads of denim – dark denim.
“ We just had our holiday open house, and we were like,‘ Oh man, we need to get some more jeans,’” she said.
Feeling rustic
Michelle Terry keeps things in-house at Rustic Impulse Boutique. Does a customer need a new coat? She’ s got it covered. Has that new coat reminded them it’ s time for a trim? She can do that, as well.
She’ s been in a few locations, but right now she’ s just up the street from Calvert at 427 W. Broadway Ave., Maryville. Terry said she opened first as a boutique in 2014. In 2016, she opened as a boutique and salon.
A full-time hairstylist, Terry said she started Rustic Impulse from a desire to fill a niche in the market.
“ The boutiques that I used to go to were way out of my price range,” she said.“ I wanted to be able to have a boutique that was more for people like me – that was more affordable.”
She offers clients a discount on boutique items the day they get their hair done. Although the shop is mostly full of women’ s clothing items, she said she also offers a UT section as well as holiday ornaments, spa packages and more.
She said puffer vests often sell out as the winter months draw near. Sweaters, cardigans and sweatshirts are usually hot-ticket items.
And yes, Terry said her denim also sells well.
MATHAUS SCHWARZEN | BCQ Boutique on Broadway is one of several businesses in downtown Maryville that advertise with outfits on a mannequin, providing a sneak peek of the treasures inside.
For anyone who wants to look great this winter season, she recommends trying out flare leg pants. A sweater or cardigan, she said, can elevate the look and make a lasting difference as the weather grows colder.
