Student of the Year Award 2017 Michael Francis, AkzoNobel Technologist, Fire and Insulation Coatings Laboratory Michael is a little over halfway through a set of six modules, working towards a Certificate at Level 3. Michael has already recorded three Distinctions and is well placed to continue in that vein, through the high quality of work that he produces. Darren James, HMG Paints Laboratory Technician/Paint Technologist Darren has been working on a set of six modules, towards a Certificate at Level 4. Darren completed those in July, achieving a Distinction, four Merits and a Pass. He has shown dedication to the task and consistency in the quality of his work. With thanks to the judges of BCF’s Student of the Year Award 2017: Malcolm Griffiths, Coatings Training Institute Tutor Malcolm is a surface coatings specialist and a graduate in organic chemistry, who has worked in the industry for many years in a wide variety of roles. His work, education and practical training, including a diploma in occupational safety and health, qualify him to assess all processes involving paints and powder coatings, from their manufacture through to their application, quality control and performance in the field. Malcolm is the leading Tutor from the Coatings Training Institute. Sheridan Smith, PPG Architectural Coatings (UK & Ireland) Technical Support Agent Since starting the chosen modules, Sheridan has consistently been achieving good marks. She has methodically and carefully worked through the modules and demonstrated a confident and enquiring mind on subjects that are new to her. Jacopo Milani, Whitford UK Development Chemist Martin Addicott, Coatings Training Institute Tutor Martin is a chemistry graduate, having studied through day release over nine years whilst working in the printing inks industry. He has always worked in a technical role and has extensive experience in the application of technology through working with suppliers, customers and e nd users. Throughout his career he has continued to learn about different technologies and ensure that logic and science is applied in all areas. Jacopo took on the challenge of working towards the highest level qualification in the Coatings Training Institute modules - Level 5. He has recently completed the last of the six modules required, resulting in one Distinction, two Merits and three Passes. His work on the assignments for those modules has been particularly extensive. 40 41
