BCF safe use campaigns - free

PaintSafe
As part of an ongoing awareness campagn to promote the safe use of members’
products, BCF launched a second edition to their PaintSafe initiative, this time for the
industrial sector. As part of the campaign, BCF have developed a leaflet that serves
as a best practice guide to ensure the safe use of isocyanate-containing coatings and
highlights how to effectively plan work in a way that avoids risks.
PLAN YOUR WORK TO AVOID RISKS
SAFE USE OF ISOCYANATES
Training
Employees should be instructed about the risks
to health arising from exposure to any hazardous
substances and informed of the precautions to be
taken. They should be trained in the use and care of
PPE.
Health checks
Employers should provide health surveillance
for paint sprayers. Biological monitoring may be
required.

More information is available at the following websites:
The decorative edition of the initiative was launched in 2017, in collaboration with
the Painting and Decorating Association, the Scottish Decorators’ Federation and
the Building Merchants Federation. It aims to promote the safe use of paint and
related products, providing best practice for decorators and other applicators during
preparation, application and drying.

DO
Read the safety data sheet and label to
determine the hazard
Carry out a risk assessment
Avoid the use of isocyanate-containing coatings
if possible
Ensure adequate extraction and filtration by
proper design and use of spray rooms, if applied
in an installation
Check efficiency of any extraction system and
know the clearance time for the booth/room
Follow correct working practices
Use air-fed breathing apparatus when spray
applying
Keep all bystanders well away from any spraying
operation
Wear appropriate PPE – RPE, gloves, eye
protection, overalls
Ensure workers are informed of the hazards of
working with isocyanates - that they can cause
asthma and dermatitis
Ensure all personnel involved in handling
isocyanate-containing coatings are trained and
fully aware of the risks

3 Use an industrial vacuum-cleaner linked to the paint scraper
3 Capture old paint with ‘paste-and-peel’ techniques
Dispose of waste
The BCF, along with the Green Blue (a joint initiative between the Royal Yachting
Association and British Marine) and the Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) have
launched a new antifouling initiative for 2019. The Protect, Collect and Dispose
Antifouling Initiative intends to raise awareness of environmental issues relating
to antifouling for those who antifoul their own vessels, as well as for marinas and
boatyards who are offering professional services.
3 Clean up and dispose of all hazardous waste correctly
An informative leaflet has been produced, along with a weather resistant poster that
can be displayed in chandlers, marinas and boatyards.
Don’t forget Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
This initiative is another step in raising awareness for safe use, as it builds on the DIY
Safe Antifouling programme BCF, RYA and British Marine launched in 2017.
