BBQ Summer 2018 | Page 64

As part of my investigation into smoking wood, I ran a poll in CountryWoodSmoke back in April asking “what species of wood chunks do you wish you could get here in the UK for smoking but currently can't obtain?” The results were interesting – from a list of 25 different woods species, the vast majority of voters went for 2 woods: peach and pecan (29 and 23 votes respectively).

As a result, BBQ Gourmet are importing some 25lb (11.34kg) boxes of peach and pecan wood chunks from the States so people over here can try them. Considering the number of competition BBQ teams in the States that put a lot of their success in competitions down to smoking with these woods, we think they’ll move pretty quickly. They’ll be part of our next shipment which is due to arrive with us in June, so keep an eye on our website at www.bbqgourmet.co.uk .

Winning Products from Kosmo’s Q

Apart from starting to import peach and pecan wood chunks from the States, there isn’t much in the way of new product ranges coming in next month (June) with our latest shipment.

The exception to that is a range of four Rib Glazes from Kosmo’s Q: Apple Habanero, Cherry Apple Habanero, Peach Jalapeno, and ‘Pineapple Heat’.

Some might say that these new rib glazes from Kosmo’s Q are the same as the ‘Rib Candy’ and ‘Bird Bath’ glazes from Texas Pepper Jelly (which we also stock), but Kosmo would strongly beg to differ. To quote Kosmo directly, “Our rib glaze is like no other. Perfect heat meets sweet in a symphony of goodness. Every one of Kosmo’s products is gluten-free and made with natural ingredients, so you can enjoy your barbecue without all the junk found in other companies' products. Mix our award-winning rib glazes into a sauce or brush ‘em straight onto your next rack of ribs for sticky sweet flavo[u]r that will knock your socks off!”.

Further, they are already winning competitions in the States. Kosmo’s Q ‘Pineapple Heat’ Rib Glaze, together with Kosmo’s Q ‘Dirty Bird’ Rub won a 1st Place at Memphis in May 2018.

Please note that the insertion of the ‘u’ in ‘flavour’ above was my responsibility. Since I founded BBQ Gourmet in 2013, I’ve been trying to teach our Americans suppliers how to speak real English, but it just isn’t working. I refuse to give up, but it’s very disappointing. 

Rob’s Smokin’ Rubs wins Back-to-Back American Royals!!

A relatively new range at BBQ Gourmet has been winning all sorts of accolades in the States recently.

In 2017, ‘Frog Sauce’ from Rob’s Smokin’ Rub was voted ‘Best Sauce on the Planet’ (out of 604 entries) at the American Royal.

This year at the American Royal, his ‘Sweet & Tangy’ BBQ Sauce was voted ‘Best Sauce on the Planet’ (out of 388 entries) and his ‘Mild (Mildly Hot) Rub was voted No. 10 in the World overall (out of 196 entries).

Putting aside the No. 10 Best Rub in the World in 2018 for now (which we shouldn’t really do), winning back-to-back ‘Best Sauce on the Planet’ at the American Royal is a huge achievement. I’ve been trying to confirm this without success, but I don’t think that has ever happened before. Certainly, it would appear that Rob Ryan knows what he is on about when it comes to producing seriously good sauces and rubs.

Well, I’ve just had a very nice picanha arrive, so I will be totally selfish and say that’s all the time I have for this issue - though Marcus might say that’s all the space I’m allowed too!  I’m off to fire up my smoker.

Have a great summer and enjoy your BBQ!
