TEAM TALK

Every issue of UK BBQ Mag we like to give one of the growing number of UK BBQ teams a chance to tell us about what they do, and who they are, this Issue it's the GrillFathers.

Formed in 2017 ready for the 2018 season, The Grillfathers is a new KCBS competition BBQ team. The team consists of Callum Barwick, an accomplished BBQ caterer, from Dorset, and Gareth Morgan, also a BBQ caterer and smoker builder. We also have several assistants who will be helping on the day. We have two comps lined up at the moment for 2018, Qfest, and Maldon, we would like to do more but work commitments make it tricky. There is a very distinct difference between the different styles of cooking when catering or competing. Cooking at home for friends and family, or catering an event is a lot more relaxed, easy going affair, whereas competing requires a lot more attention to detail, and time management.

We are very fortunate to have some great companies backing us with sponsorship. This is great because we get the brands expert product knowledge, and it helps reduce the cost burden required to compete, any team competing at the moment will tell you this is not a cheap hobby.

We are excited to be entering the KCBS competition scene at this time as BBQ competitions are really now starting to take off with professionally organised events, drawing in teams from across the UK and Europe. Previously UK comps have not had the same level of organisation and professionalism. We would hope to see more KCBS events rolled out across the country, and more business's enter into sponsorship partnerships with the organisers so the events can be marketed to as wide an audience as possible and increase the public footfall. The more exposure the comps get the greater the chance of increasing new participants into the sport.

We are very lucky to have had good first hand experience of comps thanks to previously judging, and attending a couple of comp classes, both Jackie Weight, and Southern Dutch BBQ, both of these classes are great at teaching you what is required at the comps, I would highly recommend doing either/both of these. We also have had some great advice from some of the current top teams in UK, and some successful teams in Oz and USA who have been great at sharing tips & tricks with us.
