Every issue of UK BBQ Mag we like to give one of the growing number of UK BBQ teams a chance to tell us about what they do, and who they are, this Issue it's ItsintheSmoke.
PenGrillie BBQ Competition 2018
Friendships formed and BBQ fuelled through being members of CountryWoodSmoke, three amigos decided to enter the PenGrillie BBQ Competition held at Pentillie Castle. It was the third year of the BBQ Competition and it took place over a very hot weekend in July. There were about 12 teams taking part. Four different rounds of cooking: Lamb, Chicken (poultry) and Fish which were judged by the team of Judges and then there was the Ultimate Chilli round which was a public vote (spoons sold to the public for voting with the money raised going to Children’s Hospice South West). Our team called ‘ItsintheSmoke’ was headed up by Pitmaster Steve Johnson and aided by Mark Cole and myself. Steve took charge of the Fish and Lamb round, Mark the Chicken and I was looking after the Chilli.
We all knew that our dishes tasted great as we had been trying them out individually during the run up to the competition. We had never entered a BBQ competition before as a team, but having been there last year, I knew it was a really fun, friendly BBQ competition – ideal for those just starting out and wanting to have a go at competing. And that is exactly what it was. A fun, friendly, exciting, hot day of BBQing. Our team didn’t win an individual round, although we scored very highly in the three main rounds, coming second in the Fish round, we accumulated enough points to win the coveted title PenGrillie Grand Champions and the holders of The Golden Tongs which were handed over by last year’s winners, Riviera BBQ.
Shocked was an understatement, we were over the moon to have won! What an incredible day. Now I haven’t told you what we actually cooked because we will of course be entering again next year to defend our title! (Sunday 4th August 2019).
