Flight Lieutenant Ged Swann
Originally from Manchester, Flt Lt Ged Swann worked as a medical pathology laboratory assistant before he followed his passion for aviation and joined the RAF in 1996 as an Air Electronics Operator( Radar). On completion of training, he was dispatched to the North of Scotland, serving with CXX Sqn on the Nimrod MR2 at RAF Kinloss. Which saw him deploy on operations all over the world including Iraq, Afghanistan and the Caribbean and also plenty of time flying over the sea chasing submarines. Pursuing his nagging ambition of becoming a pilot he was selected for training in 2003 and following flying training on the Tutor and KingAir he was selected as one of the first ab-initio pilots onto the Sentinel R1. Supporting Operations and exercises all over the world including Libya & Africa and returning to Iraq & Afghanistan. Deciding a career in instruction was his calling in 2014 he opted to become a Qualified Flying Instructor on Multi-Engine Pilot Training instructing on the KingAir B200 with 45 sqn at RAF Cranwell. Selected to help bring into service the KingAir replacement, in 2017 he converted onto the Phenom T1 in Dallas, then flew the ac in Brazil prior to its arrival in the UK. Ged remained with 45 Sqn on the Phenom eventually ending up as an A2 QFI and OC Sqn Standards. In 2025 was posted to Central Flying School as a Multi-Engine Examiner responsible for the maintenance of multi-engine aircrew instructional standards across Defence.
Settled in Lincolnshire with his wife, his 2 grown-up children having flown the nest, Ged enjoys travelling, having recently spent 2 months touring Europe. Alongside trying to remain fit he enjoys particularly enjoys skiing, reading and watching most sports.
2026 is Ged’ s second year on the BBMF team.
