Flight Lieutenant Jamie Jackson

Jamie, known as JJ, completed a degree in Marine Science in 1999 at Plymouth University and joined the RAF straight after but his interest in military aviation began much earlier. His father worked on airports and JJ was always fascinated by every aspect of flight. He was awarded an RAF 6th form scholarship at school, and subsequently an RAF Bursary whilst a member of Bristol University Air Squadron.
He completed Initial Officer Training at RAFC Cranwell in 2000 and after flying training was posted to 99 Sqn to fly the C17A Globemaster, completing his conversion training in Oklahoma. His 3 back-to-back tours on 99 Sqn were as Co-pilot, then Captain, and latterly as a Flying Instructor; during this period he completed multiple operational missions and was involved in the aeromedical evacuation of many wounded personnel from theatre back to the UK. He was also involved in humanitarian missions in Pakistan following the earthquake and to Indonesia and Sri Lanka following the 2004 Tsunami.
In 2012 JJ was posted to 24 Sqn, the Air Mobility Operational Conversion Unit, to help bring the A400M Atlas aircraft into service. He spent 4 months in Seville learning to operate the new aircraft before returning to 24 Sqn to design and then teach the A400M pilot training syllabus. In 2016 JJ was posted to the A400M Front Line where he continues to instruct on both 30 and LXX Sqns. He recently completed the first A400M long range Air Drop of fuel supplies to the British Antarctic Survey in Antarctica enabling scientific research to continue further into the summer.
Married to Nicola, JJ has 2 young girls and lives in Cheltenham trying to renovate a house. He spends what little free time he has at the gym, running or watching Rugby Union.
2026 is JJ’ s sixth year on the BBMF
