Barnsdale at 40
Already a presenter on Gardeners ’ World for three years , Geoff Hamilton moved to the current site of Barnsdale Gardens in 1983 . He had bought a small farmhouse with 1.8 hectares ( 4½ acres ) of pasture that could be turned into a garden . He had the innovative idea of not creating just one large garden but lots of smaller ones to represent what the majority of his viewers had at home . After his untimely death in 1996 the Gardens passed to his middle son Nick who continues to develop the Gardens as a popular place to visit . This year the Gardens celebrate their 40th anniversary and this is also the theme of the Barnsdale Gardens display .
