■ Research project analyzes patient
mental health following trauma
BUMC’s level I trauma center treats patients
who have endured the gamut of traumatic injuries and experiences—from devastating auto
collisions to falls, boating injuries, gunshot
wounds, and even suicide attempts. But while
clinicians provide lifesaving physical treatment,
it’s also important to focus on the psychological issues that surface during and after a traumatic experience. The Baylor Trauma Outcome
Project (BTOP), spearheaded by Ann Marie
Warren, PhD, psychologist and investigator with
Baylor’s Division of Trauma and Baylor Research
Institute, is studying trauma patients’ postinjury
psychological recovery, with a focus on identifying which patients are at risk for certain conditions, such as depression, posttraumatic stress
disorder, and alcohol abuse.

We wanted to take that one step further and
really analyze how a patient recovers mentally
and physically after an injury.”
