Figure. The number of hospitalized patients at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas who had serum total
cholesterol values >300 mg/dL in one month in 1993 and in each of four months in 2013.
April 2014
2 study months; 2) lack of information on the use of lipid-altering drugs
by the patients during the 2 study
months; 3) lack of information on follow-up lipid levels and outcomes in the
study patients; 4) lack of information
on the serum low-density lipoprotein
cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein
cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in
the study patients; and 5) lack of data
on the total number of patients having
lipid values determined during the 2
study months. Nevertheless, as several
population studies have shown (1),
the number of patients with serum
total cholesterol levels >300 mg/dL at
this single tertiary Texas hospital fell
dramatically in the 2 study months
20 years apart, and the average serum
total cholesterol levels in the 2 study
months also fell.
