[ WELCOME ] BY BRUCE COOK Dear Friends, Elizabeth Edwards writes on the importance of resilience when skippering a sailboat. “She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails.” As we welcome September in Newport Beach, as a sailing community, Edwards’ message rings especially true in this most challenging year. Still, we at Balboa Bay Club, Newport Beach Country Club and Balboa Bay Resort have heeded the advice and adjusted “our sails” moving forward carefully and with dedication to preserve the culture of these iconic institutions for members, guests and the community beyond. Proudly, the team has succeeded. Summer on the beach at Balboa Bay Club was delightful, given the ideal climate. The hotel reopened with attention to all precautions, attracting and serving guests in relaxed, casual elegance. It has become a regional “staycation” destination. A newly expanded wedding lawn produced a “socially distanced” inaugural ceremony on its magnificent harbor front and reservations are coming in for 2021. The course at NBCC welcomes members partaking in exceptional golf on its classic course featuring recent major renovations to important holes. This month we feature a quintessential Newport scene on our September cover, shot by photographer Ann Chatillon. A Duffy glides past the Balboa Fun Zone, landmark Ferris wheel in the background, shot at dusk on a summer August evening. Check out our feature on Duffy Boats in this issue. Also, in the September issue, we get up close and personal with Newport philanthropists Frank and Joan Randall, interviewed by writer Sue Edelstein. Our Matt Morrison shares an update on the life of beloved local musician Matt Mauser, who tragically lost his wife Christina in the horrific Kobe Bryant helicopter crash in January. Mauser, with support from his musicians, friends and children moves forward with renewed hope. Be sure to check out home cooking tips from our celebrated chef and food columnist Lana Sills. Ivan Illan reports on finance in roller coaster times and Ryan Cook on local ideas for solo sporting, hiking, biking and fitness in our own Newport backyard. All of this plus everything that is planned at the BBC, NBCC, and BBR for family fun, dining, fitness, golf and so much more in September under the wings of Leticia Rice, Casey Kaut, Marina Dutton, Aaron Trent, Melanie Hertrick and Sarah Omar. In closing, remember that nature is resilient. No matter what nature delivers, in the end, beauty and hope are restored. Human beings follow suit. Columnist John Jolliffe expresses this thought beautifully in our Final Thoughts in the back of the book. Bruce Cook Editor 6 BAY WINDOW
