O ver the last few years , as we ’ ve traveled around the country with our bass boats in tow , we ’ ve noticed more and more fishing kayaks out on the open road . It ’ s not uncommon to share the parking lot at any boat ramp with multiple kayak trailers , and we ’ re seeing substantially more fishing kayaks out on the water than ever before .
The momentous growth of kayak fishing is undeniable . With more and more anglers vacating the shoreline and venturing out to the open water in their kayaks , it ’ s easy to see that kayak fishing is a great addition to the sport of bass fishing and a terrific way for people to expand on their passion for catching fish . We certainly think it ’ s great . Like the majority of beginner anglers , Matt and I both

started out as bank anglers . We quickly graduated to float tubes and small aluminum boats – anything to get us out on the water and away from the shoreline .
Today , even with our fully rigged bass boats equipped with the latest and greatest accessories , we sometimes find ourselves choosing to fish out of our kayaks . Don ’ t get me wrong : We love zipping around the lake from spot to spot , breaking down a fishery in our bass boats , but there ’ s something to be said for the advantages of fishing out of a smaller , stealthier platform .
I don ’ t know how to explain it other than that kayak fishing brings me back to my roots and reminds me of my beginnings in bass fishing . There ’ s something about slowing down and enjoying God ’ s creation , trading

in the torque of my 250- horsepower motor for the slight hum of the trolling motor or the serene sound of my paddle hitting the water . It reminds me of the good ol ’ days .
Knowing I can ’ t run 70 mph across the lake to my next fishing spot allows me to really focus on the area I ’ m fishing . Sometimes simplifying bass fishing just results in more success . Limiting the amount of tackle you bring and simplifying your gear gives you less options to think about and more time to focus on actually fishing . If you ’ re a bass boat owner like me but haven ’ t tried kayak fishing , you should . You might be surprised by how much you love it .
