What made you decide to play bass?
I started out on viola, but when I was 10 I
wanted to play something ‘cooler’. My first
thought was guitar, but my dad was a guitarist
and I didn’t like that idea. Next were drums,
but since my brother was a drummer, I figured
I ought to pick something in the middle. That’s
when I took to bass; I grew up in a family of
musicians and every instrument except bass
was taken.
How/Where did you learn to play?
When I first decided to play, I would just put
on old RnB records or punk bands and try to
learn the bass parts…. I had “eclectic taste”
and I’ve kind-of always been all over the map
musically. In middle school and high school I
was in choir, big band, jazz combos, symphony
orchestra and even played in a few metal and
rock bands. I had some great teachers including
Carol Kaye, Bijon Watson, Whit Browne and
Baba Elefante.
Who are your musical inspirations, both
male and female?
WHAT A HARD QUESTION. Everything? My
favorite bass players are Ray Brown, Edgar
Meyer, Carol Kaye and Adam Blackstone,
but that doesn’t even touch the surface of my
favorite music.
