A

s the first cool nights of fall began arriving last month , bass started making their migration toward the backs of creeks in lakes across the country . They were drawn to these locations by huge schools of baitfish that were being corralled for the “ fall feed .” By that first cool morning when you realized you should have brought a hoodie to the ramp , the bite was already on fire .
At least that ’ s what anglers like to tell each other …
In reality , the fall transition and fall bass fishing in general are much more complex than this . If you ’ re one of the anglers who ’ s left scratching your head wondering what the fuss is all about , you aren ’ t alone . If
you ’ re tired of chasing after someone else ’ s pattern and you really want to focus on catching bigger bass this fall , I have two simple recommendations .
Catching ‘ em deep
First , forget all the traditional knowledge about fall . It ’ s not that its wrong – it ’ s that it ’ s incomplete . Yes , bass feed on baitfish . Yes , they often corral them into coves . And yes , you can catch those bass on topwaters and other shallow-running reaction baits . But you can also fish deeper . You can fish the main lake . And you can definitely catch giant bass while other anglers are catching “ schoolies .”
By focusing on mainlake structure instead of creeks ,
you ’ ll dramatically increase your odds of catching a giant bass . Big bass love quick access to deep water , and that ’ s also true in the fall . Given the choice , bass will ambush prey from the comfort of their mainlake haunts rather than having to migrate up a creek or into the back of a shallow cove .
With that in mind , I recommend fishing very specific mainlake structures . Mainlake points that divide major creek arms , large mainlake points near a dam , offshore humps that top out in 10 to 20 feet of water , and anywhere a deep creek channel comes up against a steep bank or bluff wall are all great locations to find big bass in the fall .
