Vinutha Madala of Maryland was proud of her rendition of
Hawaii’s state fish. She even had the reef triggerfish reprinted
on her T-shirt, and its Hawaiian name:
Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.
Fisher davis of mount ida, ark., emerged as the winner of
the bass Federation’s Junior World championship, which ran
concurrently with the cup on lake guntersville. thirty-seven
junior anglers represented their respective states in the event,
with six finalists fishing in the final round. davis (central
division) wound up with a limit that totaled 12-15, while scott
sledge (northern division) of greenwood, ind., was runner-up
with 11-3. other finalists included Jacob Ferrell (mid-atlantic
division) of Vernon hill, Va., with 7-14; cameron rhodes
(eastern division) of Warwick, r.i., with 5-6; kyler mckie
(southern division) of north augusta, s.c., with 3-5; and isaiah
rios (Western division) of phoenix with 2-15.
davis might be following in his father’s footsteps. his dad,
mark davis, is a bassmaster elite series pro and was the first
angler to ever win an angler of the year title as well as a
bassmaster classic championship in the same season. the
elder davis accomplished that feat in 1995.

nasa xu of katy, texas, was announced as
the winner of the annual state-Fish art contest
at the Forrest Wood cup. the high school
senior’s artwork of a largemouth bass was
selected as the best rendition of a state fish
among more than 5,000 entries.
other finalists included sarah clayton of
ohio (grades 10-12), electra lowe of tennessee
(grades 10-12), lydia yan of michigan (grades 7-
9), thomas kim of california (first place, grades
7-9), Jacqueline huang of Florida (grades 7-9),
Jennifer Zhao of new york (grades 4-6), michelle
Zhao of california (grades 4-6), Jasmine sun of
massachusetts (first place, grades 4-6),
meaghan li of Florida (grades k-3) kate
cropper of illinois (grades k-3) and Jasmine
Wang of massachusetts (first place, grades k-3).
Joe colby of condon, ore., was selected as
the educator of the year. since the program
began, colby’s students have entered the con-
test every year. colby won a $500 gift certificate
for art supplies from triarco, one of the pro-
gram’s major sponsors.
“the quality of entries this year was nothing
short of spectacular,” says karen hollingsworth,
program manager. “also, the essays that
accompanied the artwork were great. We had a
lot more international entries this year, from
asia, europe, south america and africa in par-
ticular, which is pretty cool, too.”
