Experimenting
With Frogs
John Cox has experimented with quite a few frogs and toads. Cox isn’t married
to any of them, though. He’s constantly trying new ones and rotating what he uses.
Here’s a glance at some of the frogs that’ve passed through Cox’s boat.
Jackall Iobee
Cox used this one to win the Cup at
Wheeler. He’s used it a lot in open water
and for skipping under overhanging trees.
SPRO Bronzeye Pop
This popular popping frog has replaced
most of his standard floating frogs for open
water. It’s easy to walk, and Cox believes
the spitting action it makes while walking
does a better job of calling fish up from 5
or 6 feet of water than a standard frog.
River2Sea Bully Wa 2
This frog comes in two sizes, but the
bigger one makes a nice impression in
mats. Cox will add a 1/8- or 3/16-ounce
bullet sinker into the belly if he needs
more weight to depress the mat.
Snag Proof Bobby’s
Perfect Frog
Cox fished this classic for quite a while.
He says it’s a very weedless bait, but not
as heavy as he’d like for fishing mats.
Snag Proof Bleedin’ Frog
The big upward-slanted hooks on this
bait, which is very similar to the Bobby’s
Perfect Frog, are what attracted Cox to it.
He’s caught some giants on it.
Teckel Honker Frog
84
Cox equates the noise made by the
Honker’s metal feet with the “clicking”
sound made when twitching a Devil’s
Horse. He fishes it with short twitches or
pulls and believes it has a place around
the spawn or any time fish are foraging on
small minnows.
