Scrounger was the perfect
head, but at some point the
type of plastic used to make
the bill was changed – to
the detriment of the bait, in
his opinion. He’s been able
to find a source for similar
material and is having his
heads custom made.
The key is the flexibility
of the material. Some of the
commercially available ver-
sions are made with plastic
that’s too stiff, or too soft.
When it’s just right, Lambert
says the bait will track
straight, but with a little
hunting action as it subtly
wobbles during the retrieve.
“It doesn’t look like much
in the water, but they eat it
up,” he says.

Because the schools
were smaller than in
typical years, the bass
weren’t competing to
eat, and they were posi-
tioned on very specific
spots. A precise cast
was necessary to get
them to bite. Lambert
cast the Jerky J, let it fall
to bottom and slow-
rolled it through the
strike zone.
On day two, when he
fished the roadbed,
Lambert threw an 8-inch
