Darrell Davis Head Design Davis prefers a narrow or bullet-shaped head, his first choice being a Revenge Baits Swim Jig. “It’ll come through hydrilla, pads or gator weed extremely well, and the head is so well balanced that it will run perfectly true at any speed,” he says. Revenge Baits Swim Jig Head Size Davis chooses head size based on how thick the cover is and how deep he wants the jig to run. “If I’m fishing really skinny water, say 1 to 3 feet, I’ll throw 1/4 ounce and never go any heavier,” he says. “I can make the bait ride higher or lower in the water column by changing out the trailer. If I’m fishing deeper submerged vegetation I’ll sometimes go up to 1/2 ounce so I can still make a slow presentation and keep the bait in the strike zone. That could be right over the top of grass or down in it.” Trim the Weedguard Davis says he will occasionally modify the weedguard on his swim jig, depending on the thickness of the cover. “Sometimes in really sparse vegetation I might trim the weedguard back a bit to get a little easier hook penetration,” he says. “In open-water situations, like on Kentucky Lake, I might cut the weedguard completely off and fish a 1/2-ounce jig deep, say 15 to 18 feet, with a really slow presentation.” 50 FLWFISHING.COM I JULY 2017
