A TRIO OF NEW SPOONS FROM NICHOLS
From Nichols, the company that dropped the “magnum spoon” bomb on the fishing industry, comes a trio of new spoons for 2017. At 2 1/4 inches long
and 1/2 ounce, the Mojo Flutter Spoon ($6.99) is a compact option for casting and jigging. The Ben Parker Wired Jigging Spoon ($8.99) and
Line Through Jigging Spoon ($8.99) are virtually identical in design — textured surfaces, 3 1/4 inches long, 2 1/4 ounces — except the Wired version
is built with a fixed through-wire connecting hook to line tie, whereas the Line Through is free to slide up and down the line away from the hook. The latter
is a nice touch for keeping hard-fighting bass hooked.

TOPWATER CRITTERS
Apparently the media was impressed with
the idea of luring big bass with an innocent
duckling during the 2016 ICAST New Product
Showcase in Orlando, since the Savage Gear
Suicide Duck was voted the best new hard
bait.
Whether or not you’re interested in imitat-
ing a baby duck doesn’t really matter, because
the Suicide Duck still has the potential to be a
productive, albeit nontraditional topwater in
your arsenal.
For starters, it’s a large-profile bait that
comes in a 4 1/4-inch, 1-ounce version and a
6-inch, 2 3/4-ounce version. A bit of feathers
on each hook is a nice touch, while the option
to remove the belly hook around heavy cover
makes the bait a bit more versatile. Perhaps
the most interesting feature, however, is the
pair of dabbling feet. They’re actually little
props that are similar to the “plopping” prop
of the now uber-popular Whopper Plopper.
Fish it with a straight retrieve, or by ripping
and twitching it. Price is $16.99 for the small
and $19.99 for the large.
For a slightly different approach, there’s
the 3D Rat , which is a jointed surface waker
with a large bill and detachable/replaceable
feet, arms and tail. It comes with two hook
hangers on the belly and one on the back,
providing options depending on the type of
cover being fished. It also comes in two sizes:
7 3/4 inch, 1 ounce and 11 3/4 inch, 2 1/2
