FLYING SOLO
The Bass Federation National Championship just wrapped up on the Red River in March . During that event , one young angler had an opportunity that few anglers his age have .
Vermont high schooler Andrew Goodrich represented his home state as the lone co-angler . Goodrich was able to earn his way into the National Championship because of a deal that TBF has with its high school state champions .
“ If either of the anglers on a winning team from a SAF State Championship are 16 years of age or older , TBF pays their adult membership fees to TBF and MLF ,” Cartlidge said . “ The Bass Federation also pays for their entry fees to fish in their respective state ’ s National Semifinal event . That ’ s how Goodrich won his way into the National Championship .”
Goodrich was the top co-angler from Vermont during his semifinal event on Lake Champlain in 2020 , which allowed him to move on to the Red River this spring . Goodrich finished in 38th place among the co-anglers at the National Championship .
“ He ’ s a 16-year-old kid who beat out tens of thousands of members who wanted a shot at the National Championship ,” Cartlidge said . “ That ’ s an impressive feat . To see a high school student work his way through the semifinals , be the youngest competitor at the National Championship and perform well was really amazing to see . It shows the path is there for other student anglers to take advantage of .”
