The last fish I would like to mention is a 1.48kg largemouth which on a tough day was just what the doctor ordered to add to my bag and give me my first category win at a WCBAA Elite Series event. It was caught on a mojo rigged Xcite Baits Baby Übershad in Watermelon Red colour.

Lessons Learnt

1. Believe in God and yourself.

2. Stay humble.

3. Always fish to have fun.

4. Fish with as many different anglers as you can.

5. Never stop learning.

7. Buy the best tackle you can afford.

8. Look after your equipment. Well maintained equipment adds to you pleasure and allows you to compete effectively

9. Make sure your boat is in top notch condition when braving bad weather.

10. Use good quality line and choose the correct line for the application.

11. Make sure you tie good knots.

12. Retie often.

13. Striking is for free. If in doubt – strike!

14. Fish fast when you have to and slow when you need to.

15. Stay properly hydrated on hot days.

16. Choose you boat partner carefully.

17. Enjoy, respect and appreciate all the new friends you make in the bass fishing fraternity.

18. Sign up to the local bass fishing forums. A lot can be learnt from the old hands on the forums.

19. Try to balance you family life with fishing…don’t fish yourself single!

20. Confidence and self-belief on the water is everything!
