Bass Digest: Cameron, tell us a bit about an embarrassing moment as well as a highlight in your fishing

Cameron Allen: Embarrassing : I fished Juniors last year (2013). The one event was held at Albert Falls Dam in June. My Dad and I pre-fished and I was quite confident on the day. I was paired up with a guy named “Coleman”. Everyone else landed up getting limit and I landed up blanking. Quite embarrassing!

Highlight: My Dad and I fished an interclub comp at Inanda Dam once, and we caught some nice fish – a couple of 2kg fish with a couple of 3kg fish in the mix too. The guys asked how we did and we calmly said “Hmm, not too bad, we did alright”.

Well ….. long story short – My Dad came 2nd and I came 1st. We had something like 16kg or 17kg between the two of us, and the 3rd place guy had a 7kg bag. It was quite something.

Bass Digest: Dare I ask what the winning lure of choice was?

Cameron Allen: You guessed it - we threw jigs all day long in rocky areas with deep drop-offs in about 25-40ft range.

Bass Digest: “The Great White Fluke” series of articles – tell us about this series. Why was this bait so successful for you?

Mark Allen: The white fluke is such an under-rated lure. People, in general, look at a white fluke and say “White?!”.

If you think about it, your baitfish are generally light in colour. They also don’t change colour whether the water is clean or dirty. So that, in itself, should give you an idea why I chose this lure, and why it proved to be so successful for me.

It’s very versatile as you can fish it weightless, topwater, mojo, texas, use it as a jerkbait, and even as a trailer.

I still use it and just recently at the Divisionals at Bivane Dam, I caught all my fish on the white fluke, which was quite interesting.

During this part of the interview, Mark was throwing a Shibui 3/8oz minnow head “Yuugyo Swim Jig” (colour “Hitch 1”), which he found at Bass Warehouse . It seems to be a joint product of Shibui Fishing and Talon Lures. Mark has put a white twin-tail grub on as a trailer and has a couple of rattles on it to make a bit of noise.

Bass Digest: What is this thing and what is your aim with it today?
